Careful. This is going to be a lengthy post chock-full of pictures!
That’s right. My little Pembroke Welsh Corgi is 1 year old! 7 in doggie years! Me and Chris spoil the ever loving crap out of our little pup! Why? Because we’ve always dreamed of having a little Kirby since the beginning of our relationship (over 5 years ago). That’s right, folks…not only do I set names for my future kids (Caleb Russell & Cathryn Reese – in case you were wondering), I also come up with names for future pets! Haha.
Anyway, we didn’t decide on a breed until right before me and Chris moved in together in 2008. I wanted a Westie, actually, but Chris did a good job convincing me why a PWC would be a wonderful choice…and he was right. From the moment I saw his picture, I was hooked. But it took a while to get him here.
We waited almost a year for Kirby. All of the litters had sable & white males or tri females…we waited and waited for a tri male. And finally in May 2009, we got lucky!
Thanks, Janice & South Haven Farm for blessing us with such a smart, loyal, friendly dog!
The first day (July 4th, 2009) we brought him home, we were so excited and so nervous! We both had dogs growing up, but never a dog of our own, so we wanted to be the best pet parents…ever! But we were not prepared for the constant pudding poop and the howling/whining at night. Luckily, I had ear plugs and I had Chris (thanks babe, you are zee best!) waking up every 3-4 hours to let Kirby take care of business. Oh yes, and we were (and still are!) also fortunate to have Janelle, Nina, my mom, his mom, etc. watch him whenever we went on trips or whatnot. Thanks guys!
At first, Kirby had SUCH an attitude. He nipped at our heels constantly – but he’s a herding dog, so it comes naturally. He just loved to use his teeth to scare us off. People (ie our vet) were worried that we wouldn’t be able to handle this little guy. He had already turned Alpha on us! So, after weeks of watching Cesar Milan and puppy training classes, we showed him that we were the Alphas! Haha. Oh, and um, a little snip-snip TOTALLY helped. Hehe.
So, what did we do for this cool kid? Well, we went to the K9 Karnival at a local park on Saturday. It was meh. Haha, we arrived later than we wanted to because we went to my sister’s graduation beforehand. He ran through an agility park, then we hung out at the dog park for a few. He was still pooped at the end of the day!
On Sunday, we threw him a doggie meet-up/BBQ cookout at a dog park! And remember how I said I would make cupcakes using the kit in this post? Aren’t they the cutest?
The party was a success! Lots of dogs, LOTS of food, and lots of fun. Thank you to those who came out and a special thank you from Kirby!

P.S. Are their names from you and Chris’ first initials? Haha just wondering.
@Jeddlyn – You noticed, huh? Haha! Well, I will say that I came up with those name combos recently! Chris thinks it’s funny our parents are going to have a hard time saying Caleb…like they will pronounce it as Cah-loob. Haha.
